Leading Conservative Councillors have criticised plans by the ruling Labour Council to spend £34,000 on new laptopsfor Councillors.

The plans, due to be discussed by a joint meeting of 3 Labour Cabinet Members next week, would see taxpayers fork out over £34,000 for a project to give Councillors new laptops. The proposal follows the City Council announcing the closure of 6 Children’s Centres and increased charges for local residents.

I recently joined Conservative Friends of International Development having spent considerable time on the Department for International Development (DFID) website finding out exactly where, and how, our aid is being spent.

Notwithstanding the difficult economic situation in Britain, throughout the EU and beyond, David Cameron was absolutely right to say, at the G8 Summit in May 2011, that Britain will not balance the books on the backs of the world’s poorest.

Dear Editor

The lights have been purchased following numerous fundraising initiatives which would not have been possible without the Traders and of course the generous donations from the public...

Conservative spokesman Councillor Allan Andrews has welcomed the decision of the Council to conduct a review of cycle lanes in the city, following a request he made at the Cabinet Member (City Services) meeting on Tuesday 11 October.

In June, Allan spent a morning with the Earlsdon Cycling Group to look at the problems experienced by cyclists on some of Coventry’s busiest roads. Following the morning spent cycling, Allan met with senior Council Officers to discuss the problems in more detail and has now formally called for a review to take place.

About 750,000 pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are finding out their GCSE results.

We congratulate young people receiving their results today. They have worked hard over the last two years and deserve their success.

Results show there was an increase in the proportion of entries awarded between an A* and a C grade. A total of 69.8% of entries made that grade.

However, once again, there have been worrying falls in the number of pupils sitting sciences, languages and humanities. That's why we are introducing the English Baccalaureate. We know that employers and universities value a broad academic education, but today's figures are further evidence that Labour steered young people away from rigorous subjects. This has got to change if we want to keep up with the likes of China and Singapore.
