Letter to Papers - Speed Cameras

News & Articles >>

Dear Editor

The Coalition Government has made a long-overdue announcement about speed cameras in the UK - many are to be turned off.

Whilst our road safety record has continued to improve over recent years, the rate of progress has been affected partly by the last Labour Government’s fascination on a single method of reducing casualties, namely speed cameras.

The previous Government almost trebled the number of fixed speed cameras and presided over a 20 per cent reduction in the number of traffic police, showing a blatant disregard for genuine road safety. Their approach has led to a neglect of crucial issues that cannot be addressed by Big Brother-style cameras alone. In addition, it fails to tackle the problems associated with drivers who are either uninsured, drunk or under the influence of drugs - a so-far much neglected issue.

The key for the Council in Coventry has to be finding ways to prevent injuries and save lives. Through better road design and safety measures that prevent injuries and death

instead of those that raise the most money, our roads can be made safer for everyone.

Yours faithfully
